A 2-year-old Northern Kentucky boy is dead Thursday after consuming fentanyl that belonged to his sleeping mother, police say.

First responders found the 2-year-old boy around 3:34 p.m. in respiratory arrest. He was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where he was declared dead.

An investigation found the child had been home with his mother, whom police have identified as 33-year-old Lauren Ashley Baker.

Baker admitted to getting fentanyl from Cincinnati, Ohio last Saturday using money from her stimulus check, according to the police report. She brought it back to Ludlow, where she shared it with two people, police say.

At some point Thursday, Baker “took a shot” of fentanyl and fell asleep, according to the police report. The 2-year-old ingested some of the fentanyl in her purse while she slept, investigators say.

Baker woke to find the contents of her purse emptied out and the child not breathing, according to the police report. The boy’s father then arrived and called 911, police say.

Baker gave officers some quantity of fentanyl from her purse, according to police. Investigators also found the substance, believed to be fentanyl, scattered across the bed, police say. They found empty Narcan packaging at the scene as well.

Baker was arrested and charged with murder, importing fentanyl and trafficking in a controlled substance. She is being held without bond.

Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders said while the child did ingest the fentanyl, he could not confirm if it was eaten.

The Kenton County Grand Jury has indicted a mother for Murder in connection with the overdose death of her two-year-old child on in Ludlow, Kentucky.

Lauren Ashley Baker, 33, also faces felony charges of Importing Fentanyl and two counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Fentanyl). A Murder conviction carries a punishment of 20 to 50 years, or Life, in prison. The other charges each carry a possible sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison.

Baker was arrested March 18, 2021 by Ludlow Police Detective Jason Compton after an investigation into the death of her son . Ludlow Police and Fire Departments responded to Baker’s house on Stokesay Ave. in Ludlow the same day after a 911 call from the child’s father because the infant was not breathing.

Arrest records indicate first responders found the contents of Baker’s purse, including a baggie of Fentanyl, scattered about a bedroom where Baker said she had been taking a nap with her son. Ludlow Police also say Baker provided Fentanyl to two individuals in Ludlow after purchasing the drug in Cincinnati, Ohio using funds from her stimulus check.

“Addicts need to be sure their children are safe, whether that means keeping narcotics out of reach, or giving their children to someone who can raise them in a safe, drug-free environment,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders. “Addiction is no excuse for putting a child’s life in danger.”

When 2-year-old Jaxson Vogt died in March 2021, he had more than 10 times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system, prosecutors said in court.

The boy's mother, 35-year-old Lauren Baker, is facing charges of murder, importing fentanyl and trafficking in a controlled substance. Prosecutors said Jaxson died after consuming fentanyl he found in his mother's purse.

Baker's trial began Wednesday before Kenton County Circuit Judge Kate Molloy. It's expected to continue into next week.

On March 13, 2021, Baker went to Cincinnati to buy fentanyl with money from her federal stimulus check, according to a police report. She then returned to Northern Kentucky with $1,200 worth of fentanyl and gave quantities of the drug to two other people, including the child's father, prosecutors said.

Baker admitted that, five days later, she "took a shot" of fentanyl prior to taking a nap with Jaxson at their home on Stokesay Avenue in Ludlow, Kentucky, the report states. When she woke up the contents of her purse, including the drugs, were scattered and Jaxson was lying unresponsive on the bed.

The toddler was transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center where he was later declared dead.

Prosecutors said Baker was aware fentanyl is deadly, but brought it into her home regardless, adding she also knew Jaxson could get into her paraphernalia. Just a year earlier, according to prosecutors, the toddler got ahold of a burnt spoon Baker used to heat fentanyl.

"She knew the risk it posed to Jaxson, she knows the risk of fentanyl and she did it anyways," said Kenton County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Maria Schletker. "And her choice − choosing herself over her 2-year-old son − that resulted in his death."

Baker had a system for storing her fentanyl and she took substantial precautions to keep opioids out of her children's reach, John Beaulieu, Baker's public defender, said in court Wednesday.

Beaulieu said Baker, upon noticing that Jaxson was unresponsive, immediately administered Narcan and performed CPR until first responders arrived. He said Baker was grief-stricken and inconsolable when police reached the home.

At the time of Jaxson's death, Baker was receiving treatment at a methadone clinic because she suffered from opioid use disorder, he added.

"Lauren Baker is not a murderer," Beaulieu said. "Despite Lauren's flaws, she still loved her son."
