CONWAY, N.H. — Nathaniel E. Kibby, the 34-year-old man accused of kidnapping Abigail Hernandez nine months ago, was ordered held on $1 million cash bail after his arraignment this afternoon in a New Hampshire courtroom.
Judge Pamela Albee told Kibby he faced a possible maximum sentence of seven years for the felony kidnapping charge. She set numerous conditions for probation, if Kibby makes bail. She also set a probable cause hearing for Aug. 12.

The St. Germains said the shipping container was added to the property a few years ago. They thought it was to store the motorcycle of Kibby’s then-girlfriend, a woman named Angel. Jeanette said she used to see the couple walking a Doberman pinscher around the neighborhood.

The Conway Daily Sun today summarized Kibby’s numerous contacts with law enforcement in New Hampshire, which included a 1998 incident when a teenaged KIbby was found guilty of assaulting a 16-year-old girl, who was a high school freshman at the time.
The newspaper reported that Kibby approached the victim while she was walking toward the school bus. He grabbed hold of her jacket near her neck, which prevented her from leaving. The victim broke away and Kibby was eventually convicted of assault, the newspaper reported.
Kibby claimed at trial that the victim had written 50 letters to him during a four-month dating relationship, something the victim testified never happened, the newspaper reported.
On Monday, law enforcement officials announced the arrest of Kibby, but remained quiet on the circumstances of the kidnapping and how the teen came to be reunited with her family. They said Hernandez, 15, helped lead authorities to Kibby.
Officials said Kibby is accused of “knowingly confining” Hernandez on Oct. 9, 2013, “with a purpose to commit an offense against her.” They did not release any further information.
Hernandez’s mother, Zenya, spoke publicly for the first time in remarks aired on the “Today” show Monday morning. She said that her daughter’s appearance was markedly different when she returned home last week.
“She was very thin, very thin. She lost a lot of weight, very pale, she had a look in her eyes that I’ve never ever seen before,” Zenya Hernandez said.
She reasserted her belief that Abigail did not run away and did not know the man who took her.
