CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The driver in a school bus crash that killed six elementary school children has made his bond and is out of jail while his case proceeds.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokesman J. Matt Lea says 25-year-old Johnthony Walker has been released to the county community corrections program, which offers an alternative to incarceration.

Walker had been in jail in isolation facing 34 charges, including six counts of vehicular homicide. Authorities say Walker was speeding in November 2016 when he wrecked the bus on a curvy Chattanooga road while carrying 37 children.

Walker's defense attorney has said he swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle, CBS affiliate WDEF reports.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Don Poole lowered Walker's bond from more than $100,000 to $50,000. Walker must use GPS monitoring and can't drive motor vehicles pending trial, which is set to begin Feb. 27.

He needs to keep his ass inside and hidden, I'm sure there is a target on his back because of all the kids he killed. He was probably safer in jail.

Johnthony Walker has been found guilty of all six counts of criminally negligent homicide, a lesser charge than vehicular homicide.

On Thursday, jurors returned to court to continue deliberations in the trial of Johnthony Walker, the man accused of killing six Woodmore Elementary School children in a bus crash in 2016.

Johnthony Walker faces several charges, including six counts of vehicular homicide, for the deaths of 8-year-old Keonte Wilson, 9-year-old Cor'Dayja Jones, 6-year-old D'Myunn Brown, 6-year-old Zyaira Mateen, 9-year-old Zoie Nash, and 10-year-old Zyanna Harris in November 2016. You can read more about the timeline of events here.

Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the jury came out to the courtroom to ask whether the aggravated assault charges against Walker should be considered separately or as a whole. The judge repeated his instructions from the day prior.

I’m not excusing him but I kinda feel sorry for the guy. Despite knowing better, a lot of people speed and use a cell phone while driving with their own damn kids in the car, not someone else’s. If you’re lucky, you haven’t killed anyone. Yet.

He took six children's lives. Now he will pay and also not see his own child grow up. He should have been more responsible. Especially when he has so many children's lives in his hands. That's what he should have thought of as he grabbed his cell phone as he was speeding down the road.

It was an emotional day in court as a judge sentenced the driver in the deadly Woodmore bus crash.

Johnthony Walker will face four years behind bars for his role in the crash that killed six children.

Walker left the Hamilton County courthouse after being sentenced.

He is allowed to remain out on bond for 30 days, which is the time he has left to file an appeal.

"I just want to apologize for taking the lights out of your lives and how it has impacted everybody," Walker said through tears ahead of his sentencing Tuesday.

Diamound Brown, who lost her son D'Myunn, said she needed to hear it.

"I have longed for those words. I have been waiting on them to just come out of his mouth purely and I got that today," Brown added.

The judge explained his decision to sentence Walker to four years in prison, saying he weighed factors like Walker's employment and criminal history.

"The one he kept coming back to, which I think is important is that he sent him to prison to avoid depreciating the seriousness of the crime," Hamilton County District Attorney Neal Pinkston said.

The feeling inside the courtroom as the judge weighed his decision was tense.

At times, the gallery erupted as those listening became angry.

Jasmine Mateen, who lost her daughter Zyaira in the crash, was overcome with emotion.

She believes the sentence should have been longer.

"Four years isn't enough. He killed six lives, six innocent babies," she said.

Mateen was one of three mothers who addressed the court ahead of the sentencing.

Misti Nash, who lost her daughter Zoie, chose to speak on behalf of Walker, saying she forgives him.

"I remember seeing your face the day of the bus crash and I seen how you looked and I seen how hysterical you was and I seen the emotion," Nash said.

So much creepier when you consider the job he had. A dude with a liking for 14 year old girls sought employment as a schoolbus driver.

It doesn't make it any less tragic, but a possible silver lining here is that those 6 young lives no doubt prevented who knows how many other kids from being molested and raped by this vile trash.

Still interested in any news of a lawsuit btw. ANybody read anything yet? This family needs millions from the city, i dont see how they dont get it either.

Here's a current update on suits.

UPDATE: The mother of D'Myunn Brown has settled a wrongful death lawsuit against Durham School Services and Johnthony Walker in the 2016 Woodmore bus crash.

The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.

PREVIOUS STORY: Two Hamilton County employees have filed lawsuits against school bus contractor Durham, saying they suffered emotional trauma from the 2016 Woodmore bus crash.
[....]
A secretary at Woodmore, Alisha Bibbs, and a teacher at the school, Stephanie Muhammed, say they were expected to return to work the next day after the crash and act normal.

The lawsuits allege negligence on Durham's behalf.

PREVIOUS STORY: There are two new lawsuits claiming gross negligence as the cause of the deadly Woodmore Elementary School crash.
The lawsuit states two children suffered "disability, loss of the enjoyment of life and psychological pain" when Johnthony Walker lost control of the bus and overturned on Talley Road on November 21, 2016.
Their attorney, Herbert Thornbury, named Walker, Durham School Services and National Express in both complaints and asked for $1 million each in damages.

PREVIOUS STORY: Three new lawsuits were filed on November 9 in connection to the deadly Woodmore school bus crash.
The lawsuits were filed by attorneys with Murphy, Falcon & Murphy and Berke, Berke & Berke law firms.

"The complaints allege that defendants Durham School Services, L.P., National Express, LLC, and Johnthony Walker are guilty of guilty of negligence, gross negligence, and willful and wanton conduct demonstrating a conscious indifference to the lives and safety of others," states a release from the firms.

"The Complaints further allege that Defendants Durham and National Express are guilty of negligently hiring Walker to drive the bus; negligently training him; negligently continuing to employ him after receiving numerous complaints; failing to properly supervise him; failing to install monitoring equipment to monitor him; failing to pay reasonable wages in order to obtain competent drivers; and failing to operate their system in a manner that would ensure the lives and safety of the children they were transporting," the release says.

"They also failed to maintain safe buses," the release concludes.

Here's what you should know about the Hamilton County cases filed so far:

How many are there? As of Dec. 21, a month since the crash, six civil claims had been filed. Five were filed by family members of children who were on the bus and injured. One was filed by relatives of Zyanna Harris, a 10-year-old who was killed. The lawsuits ask a jury to decide what dollar amount is appropriate to compensate the families for their pain and suffering. Harris' family seeks $5.5 million.

Will they get that much money? That's up to a jury to decide, but Tennessee also sets caps on certain kinds of damages a person can receive in cases like these.

"All of these hurt children, and some dead children, and families just distraught, and our legislature has said that $750,000 for loss of love and affection is all these families should get," said Randall Kinnard, a Nashville personal injury lawyer who is not involved in the cases but who reviewed the pending lawsuits at The Tennessean's request. That $750,000 cap applies to the family members' claims related to their emotional loss; however, the families can receive additional money to compensate for medical bills or lost wages, Kinnard said.

Who are they suing? All six list Durham School Services, the private company that hired Walker, and Walker as defendants. Kinnard said employers can be held responsible for their employees' actions as long as the employee is acting within the normal scope of employment. A lawsuit filed by Harris' mother and father also names Thomas Built Buses, the bus manufacturer as a defendant.

What are their claims? Generally, the lawsuits claim Durham was negligent in training, hiring, supervising and disciplining its drivers. They allege Walker was being careless and negligent while on the road. The lawsuit that names Thomas buses as a defendant includes a product liability claim, alleging the manufacturer knowingly built buses that were dangerous. The lawsuit says the window system did not minimize risk of ejection and that the bus did not include seat belts.

What comes next? Durham School Services will file responses to each of the cases. It's also extremely likely that more lawsuits will be filed. There were 37 students on the bus, and only six civil claims filed so far.

It has always blown my mind that school busses don’t have seat belts. The children should be in a 5 point restraint not a lap belt.

Johnthony Walker, 26, was indicted by a Davidson County grand jury on eight counts of aggravated statutory rape and one count of exploitation of a minor, according to WSMV-TV.

Walker, who was out on bond while appealing his conviction for criminally negligent homicide and assault in the deadly 2016 crash, was arrested in June at a 14-year-old girl's home, WSMV-TV reported.

Walker admitted having sex with the teen, WSMV-TV reported, citing both an affidavit and a Nashville police sergeant's testimony.

The sergeant reportedly testified that Walker had concerns over the girl’s age and that he found it “repulsive” that it happened.
