Errol Johnson / Chasara Jones / Raven Ruth
A Memphis mother charged with the murder of her special needs daughter is awaiting extradition in New Orleans, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Raven Ruth, 35, was arrested in New Orleans on Wednesday, five days after she and two others were indicted Shelby County on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child neglect.

Chasara Jones, 41, and Errol Johnson 42, were arrested Tuesday and are in Shelby County Jail. Jones was the caregiver for 12-year-old Andrea Ruth, and Johnson was Andrea’s father.

Andrea Ruth, who suffered from several ailments, died in her home in the 7000 block of Arapaho in Millington in November 2012.

Ruth died of infected bedsores and gangrene.

She suffered from asthma, hypertension and obesity.

Ruth was scheduled to have her legs amputated in May of 2011 because of the gangrene, but the family missed that and apparently all subsequent medical appointments.

According to prosecutors, “At the time of the child’s death on Nov. 24, 2012, at the family home in the 7000 block of Arapaho, paramedics reported that the girl’s sores were so advanced that bones in her toes were visible.”

Child-protection workers received a call after the girl did not show up for her appointments, said Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Department of Children's Services. DCS arranged for a home-health care worker to be there for the girl and presumed that the health-care agency was taking care of her, Johnson said. He said there were no other reports of additional problems until she died.

Jones, the home-health aide, is said to have told investigators that she was aware of the child's condition, but didn't notify the health-care company she worked for or contact police or child-welfare investigators. Records show that a Chasara Jones of Memphis is still a licensed nursing aide in the state of Tennessee, state Department of Health spokeswoman Shelley Walker said in an email. Walker said the department as a policy does not say whether a health-care worker is being investigated by the state.

Higgins, the spokesman for the D.A.'s office, said nobody ever told police that the girl might be in trouble.

"Not only do parents of course have a duty to take care of their children, every adult in the state of Tennessee has a duty under the law to report if you so much as suspect that a child is being physically or sexually abused," added Weirich.

The family had re-located to the Mid-South after Hurricane Katrina.

Action News 5 interviewed Errol Johnson, his wife, Raven Ruth, and their two children on April 17, 2006 to get their reaction to a New Orleans mayoral debate. The family went home to Louisiana to bury Andrea, but her father, Johnson, remained in Memphis.

WTF is with her posting this pic????
What the actual fuck. That's not okay. Fucking crazy ass mother fuckers. I worked in a nursing home and I've seen my fair share of bed sores, those things are nasty and horrifying and would be unimaginably painful. I cannot BELIEVE someone would let another person die that way. Especially your own child. Ugh. This story pisses me off.

Oh.my.god. You have to be a heartless mother fucker to let ANYONE, especially your own damn child, be neglected to the point that amputation from gangrene is necessary and bones are visible from the bed sores. This bitch has some balls to kill her child and then constantly cry about missing her. That had to have been an excruciatingly painful, slow death. She didn't seem to care too much about her daughter's presence when she was alive, or that she was in tremendous pain. She should just do the world a favor and off herself.

*my head is spinning*

Gangrene. Good God nobody in our country should be losing limbs to gangrene. Let alone a child supposedly in care of its parents.

I'm interested in knowing what condition she had that made her special needs? Or was she special needs because of her condition at her death? I can't think of anything that with only casual care would lead to this baby having gangrene. If my math is correct she was scheduled for the amputations in 2011, nearly 3 years ago and that would make her about 9 years old. She was obese so she was eating something substantial, and I'm sure asthma contributed to the obesity since she couldn't run around as much, but it's hard to tell which came first. Poor baby failed from the day you were born.

Asthma, hypertension and obesity shouldn't have caused her to be bedridden or otherwise immobile. Something else had to have been going on.
Was she developmentally disabled in any way?

Posting a death photo, or at the very least, near death photo takes attention whore to a new level. The fact that NOBODY called her out on it is even more disturbing. Had one of my fb friends posted something like that, I'd have been unfriended in record time for my unsupportive rant. Poor girl never had a chance.

Its my belief that this little girl was special needs...developmentally disabled. Obviously very inactive due to her disability and obesity. They did not see to her needs at all. This child suffered soooooo much! I will never be able to wrap my brain around any one treating another human being like this. It never should have gotten to the point of needing amputations. Bedsores tells me she was physically disabled and I believe she was also cognitively impaired. IMHO

You know, they were obviously feeding the child (which is surprising), and she had been getting medical care (she had to have been seeing a doctor for him to make that drastic of a step), why would they decide to not do the life saving amputation? The child would have been even more bed-ridden with no legs. I am wondering if her disability was diabetes. In children it is very important that the caregivers are spot on. And I can't help thinking that they decided to let the gangrene and sores relieve them of the bothersome child. Sad.

I read the first sentence as that they were awaiting execution in New Orleans, after reading the article it's what I wish that it said.

Special Needs implies that there was a developmental issue, the physical aliments all seem to be tied back to her weight, as in if she were not obese then asthma may not be as much of a factor and she almost certainly wouldn't have had high blood pressure. The gangrene and amputation make me wonder if she also had uncontrolled diabetes, which could explain her weight as well. Honestly, there aren't many excuses for letting your child get obese at age 12, short of cerebal palsy, developmental disorders don't cause immobility or one to be bedridden.

HEY AMERICA??? "Not only do parents of course have a duty to take care of their children, every adult in the state of Tennessee has a duty under the law to report if you so much as suspect that a child is being physically or sexually abused," added Weirich. Not just TN either EVERY ADULT HAS A DUTY TO REPORT, not just teachers, doctors and PD.. EVERY ADULT, lets say that one more time so that EVERY American Adult hears, EVERY ADULT HAS A DUTY TO REPORT Ya all hear that? EVERY ADULT!

Those fatty deposits on the eyelids are often a sign of metabolic disorders.

I've worked with developmentally disabled adults for 25 yrs. Many also have physical disabilities. My program has several total care individuals who come for quality of life activities and to provide stimuli and socialization. All their needs need to be met with physical assistance. Some can't feed them selves. Many have health issues as well. Many use wheelchairs. Many have special diets and require ground/pureed foods etc. Many require diaper changes. Just wanted to share a little more information with you all on that subject.

And the mom has several pictures on her Facebook of the girl standing and playing when she was younger. I wish we knew what she had.

SMH. I'm wondering if the parents were afraid to bring her to the doctors for fear of being prosecuted for child neglect.

Poor little soul. Somehow it's harder to see that at one time this little girl was active & happy. Not that an entire life spent bedridden would be better, just a little less tragic?!

Meanwhile, mom & the other adults who stood by & watched this little angel suffer as her legs rotted away need to be tied to beds & left to suffer the same fate!

The mother of a 12-year-old Millington girl who died from gangrene and infected bedsores has been indicted on first-degree murder charges.

According to District Attorney Amy Weirich, “Raven Ruth’s indictment was returned by a grand jury in February, but could not be made public until this week when she was extradited to Shelby County from New Orleans.”

Ruth, 36, is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated child neglect in the 2012 death of young Andrea Ruth.

The child’s father, Errol Johnson, 42, and a home-health aide, Chasara Jones, 41, face the same charges.

A home-health aide, Chasara Jones, has pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse in the case of a bedridden 12-year-old girl. Jones was sentenced to 13 years and 6 months in prison.

Andrea Ruth was bedridden, unable to walk, and died of sepsis from infected bedsores that had gone untreated. She lost some 50 pounds between May 2011 and November 2012 when she died.

Her mother Raven Ruth pleaded guilty in August to aggravated child abuse and second degree murder in the girl’s death. Raven Ruth was sentenced to 25 years.

Andrea Ruth’s father, Errol Johnson, was convicted in January 2016 of criminally negligent homicide and two counts of aggravated child abuse, including one count involving serious bodily injury of a vulnerable child and one count involving heinous, atrocious and cruel circumstances. Johnson was sentenced in March 2016 to 22 years in prison.

Not one leg to be amputated but BOTH- they missed that appointment - that falls dead on that CNA as her provider - NOT to mention - one whom seems to be absentee- stupid asses should never see the outside again

Jesus.

I could have sworn the victim was that same little girl in America who died after a tonsillitis operation and the family fought a lawsuit over keeping her going on machines.

Prattling on about how God will save her blah blah. The two girl's look remarkably similar.

Look, I get it. Intensive medical care in America is extortion. Paying those bills is simply just beyond some people and their financial capacity. And with a child like this little girl, who will never get better and be an independent, functioning member of society, the costs are lifelong and literally bankrupting.

Given this - and given the parent's clear lack of regard for their daughter - they should have abandoned her. Signed her over to the state and washed their hands of it all.

If you're callous and cruel enough to let her rot to death in her bed, then signing her off as a ward of the state should be a very easy choice to make. Plus, the poor kid wouldn't have suffered and experienced an excruciating death.

Fry the lot of them.
