There are two very simple ways to include an image:

1. Use the Image Button
UDqj5M0.jpg
on the editor toolbar. Paste the image URL in the popup (without IMG tags). This will also provide a preview in the reply box.

2. Use the IMG tags with the URL as explained on the forum Help > BBCodes page. Your image will appear when you post.

For either method you will need the URL of the image.

Example:
  1. Right click on the image and either save it to your computer or copy the image location/URL
  2. Go to http://imgur.com/
  3. Press the button that says either "Computer" or "Web" (based on whether you saved or copied URL in Step 1) then click "Start Upload"
  4. Once Imgur has the image, copy the "BBCode (message boards & forums)" that they give you into your post here on D'D. (or you may copy the URL they give in "Direct Link (email & IM)" and use the image button in your post here instead)

DO NOT HOTLINK IMAGES!

Hotlinking refers to using the URL of an image hosted on a site that one does not have permission to link to. It is a big no-no to link to an image without permission. Don't to it without permission. Sites do not like it when you steal their bandwidth! Save yourself and D'D from headaches and do not do it. I'm serious! If I find someone repeatedly doing it and they don't stop it, I'll rack up some warning points on them.

News sites, other blogs, and just about anywhere except graphics and hosting sites DO NOT allow linking to their images and will come complaining.

Linking to an image does NOT put it in your post. it only displays what it is linked to. Because most news sites cycle out articles, you will also find that after a certain amount of time they either delete articles (and the images with them) or put them behind paywalls. If for some odd reason, they did allow linking, they would eventually be useless anyway.

Sites will give you the URL to link to if it is OK to use it. Use that URL in the pop-up box when adding the image.

DO NOT HOTLINK IMAGES!

If you find an image you want to use on a graphics site such as http://www.Glitter-Graphics.com/ (as example - there are a million such image sites on the web), use the image according to instructions on the site.

If you have a picture already on your computer from your camera, saved from an email, you created it, or it magically appeared, you need to use an image hosting site to upload it to.

A few Image Hosting site suggestions:
http://imgur.com/
http://photobucket.com/
http://imageshack.us/
http://tinypic.com/

They will give you the image location (URL) for linking and often formatted with the IMG code for easy use of whichever one you use.

If you do not have an account with whatever service you use (many allow upload & hosting without an account), images may disappear or be replaced after a certain amount of time (usually 90 days). Make sure you know the rules of whichever service you choose.

Also, DO NOT use your real name in the username of the hosting account. Unless you don't mind everyone figuring out your real name and possibly browsing your personal pictures if you use the space for that too (It's happened here before, folks).

Some may have file size limits and no one likes a photo that takes up their whole screen anyway, so please resize ginormous images before uploading (or during upload on some services).

P.S. Avoid Simplest-Image as a host because they toss up error messages even if you properly link photos.

When I right-click on an image and "save image URL," that is ok? Will I know if the site doesn't want me to do it?

No that is not OK. Places that allow you to link to them will give you the code. Just because your browser allows you to take the code does not mean you should.

Sites can see that the image is getting traffic while their site is not. Sites do not want to pay for bandwidth for people that are not even using their site. That shit costs money. That's why it's called "bandwidth theft". There are methods for discovering where the image has been hotlinked and if they feel like it, they can come over here and kick ass (on the person who linked and D'D) if they feel like it.

Some places just remove the image so wherever it was used will not be able to anymore. Some place error messages on the image (Simplest Hosting did it to many of mine - but they are all linked correctly - just click 'em and see. Bastids.) Other places will replace things they found hotlinked with silly stuff like:
HhQqZa6.jpg

and sometimes porno.

As I said above: News sites, other blogs, and just about anywhere except graphics and hosting sites DO NOT allow linking to their images. Safe practice is to just get a free host and use them.

Safest for me is to let someone else do it, because I really am 2 stupid 4 the internetz! Or I will ask nicely if I need something, everyone is so nice here, I'm sure some sucker....I mean, nice person will do it for me!

It's not that hard. The very easiest way to do it if you want to share something you found on the internet is to:
  5. Magic! happens when you post your message.
Try it, you'll like it... and be surprised at how easy it is.

Thank you @Dakota, when the opportunity arises, I will try, but really and truly, you probably don't want to me to. LOL I think I'm operating at the extent of my intelligence now! I enjoy what I do and I leave the fancy stuff to the guys that live on the edge!

Rut roh... I just did it the wrong way. I wont ever do it that way again. Sorry.

Glad you 'bumped' this thread to the recent comments section. I hadn't seen it before, but now I'm pretty sure I've posted the wrong way a few times. Sorry! I will make sure to double check this thread if I post any images in the future :asshat: Think maybe that's a smiley hiding under a dunce cap...

Oops, I learn something new & useful everyday :p I guess it's still kind of appropriate since I feel like a bit of an ass for not reading the rules thoroughly before posting.

going through DVs pms shes sent me over the years and have seen people just posting fonts any size
according to her rule
titles arent to be any bigger a size 5
( thats if you put titles in the thread not the actual title itself)
article letters no bigger then 4
no bolding whole threads or making fonts bigger so it look like screaming

Third time the charm, I've been reading this wrong everytime. I wondered why my imgur links never worked, I switched to bbc codes but I've still used the img codes...

I've realised I've hotlinked images in 2 past posts. Should I report my own posts is that easiest to get them deleted?

Im not sure the best route for the hotlinked ones you already have, but if you are still having trouble with posting pics China did a step by step with me in a pm, I am sure if you pm her she will help you.

Thanks for replying. I reported them myself with a little note.

I just followed Dakota instructions & low and behold, so I posted this ecard, uhhh its pretty simple how did I get it wrong

I recommend avoiding either Imageshack or Tinypic, as both tend to delete older images - and sometimes Tinypic will erroneously swap images/links, so the image displayed will be something else and completely unrelated. Imgur seems pretty solid, and I've never seen a linked image from them die yet.

If you use Firefox or Chrome, you can make rehosting images to Imgur (so as to avoid hotlinking images) super-easy with Imgur Uploader, a handy browser extension. Imgur will grab the image directly from the site, so you do not need to download a copy and reupload it.

After installing/restarting, just right-click an image on any page and select Imgur > Quick Upload - it'll open a new tab with the uploaded image. Right-click the image and select Copy Image Location.

After installing, right-click the image and select Upload to Imgur - it'll open a new tab with the uploaded image. Right-click the image and select Copy image URL.

I use chrome with windows 7 I have a photo on my computer that I want to post. I have read the post on how to do it. But it talks about two buttons web or computer that I can not seem to find or understand. I got lost trying to understand the BB help.
A step by step would be nice.

That's because she wrote that guide a while ago, and they've probably since changed their layout.

If you've got a copy of the photo on your hard drive, go to imgur and click on upload images and it'll open a popup in the page - on that popup, click browse your computer. It'll open a Windows Explorer popup - navigate to your image file in that window and click Open. Then click Start Upload on the previous popup. Once it's done uploading, the page will redirect to your uploaded image page. Right-click the image and pick copy image location/url/etc. Then come back here and click the Image button on the toolbar (between the Smilies and Media buttons) and paste your copied URL into the popup, then click Insert.
