The Volusia County grand jury Wednesday handed up an indictment in the death of an Edgewater contractor who was found robbed, gagged and hogtied in his home.

Joseph Edward Jordan, 39, was charged with first-degree felony murder and robbery with a firearm and/or deadly weapon in connection with the June 24 fatal assault on his roommate.

The roommate, Keith Cope, 50, was found bound to his bed with rope and duct tape, where he'd been left for four days. He died two weeks later at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

Police said Jordan, a registered sex offender, tied up Cope, and fled to South Florida with the bound man's wallet and pickup. The binding included duct tape on Cope's face and neck, reports state. Cope was unable to speak when paramedics arrived.

Jordan was originally charged in Broward County with failing to register as a sex offender and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Although police say Cope was not beaten, despite initial reports to the contrary, authorities say he died from injuries suffered by being tied up.

Cope, who was found by an acquaintance, was bound so tightly and for so long that his left arm had to be amputated. He suffered a stroke while he was tied up and died in the hospital July 13, authorities say.

According to court records, Jordan has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for grand theft, burglary and false imprisonment. He was released from prison last July.

Neighbors said the men kept to themselves and were rarely seen outside, other than when one was cutting the grass.

Jordan remains held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail

trust me...joseph jordan is a piece of shit scumbag loser and he will get what he deserves. Personally...I wish they would allow me to pull the fucking plug. however, no body is innocent in this case. Whether he deserved death or not, that is not the concern. You play with fire...your going to get burned..in other words, stay they fuck away from drugs and people with issues.
 
Death penalty trial begins for man accused in roommate's murder

Joseph Jordan's attorney says his client was just trying to collect money owed to him by Keith Cope back in June 2009 and there was no intent to kill the man who gave him a place to live and an occasional construction job.

They say it was a violent robbery, in which Cope was hog-tied, hands and feet behind his back, tied to a bed, with duct tape wrapped around his mouth.

He was left like that for four days, until he was finally discovered.
While Cope was tied up, alone in his home, prosecutors contend Jordan traveled to South Florida with Cope's stolen debit card and took out $2,300 over a 3-day period.

Paramedics and EMTs described Cope's condition when he was discovered inside his Victory Palm Drive home in Edgewater.


Justin Nickels with Edgewater Fire Rescue told jurors what he saw when he walked into Cope's bedroom.

“From my point of view, the experience I had up to that date, it didn't look good. I saw an arm that was kind of up in the air that appeared to be livid.â€￾

That left arm was eventually amputated by doctors at the hospital.

Matthew Powell found Cope after driving up from South Florida in Cope's stolen pick-up truck.
He testified Jordan told him what he did and that there was money still to be made in the house.

“He basically was telling me that he left the safe open and if I wanted to, I could go clean it out,â€￾ said Powell.

“While Keith was tied up?â€￾ prosecutors asked.

“Correct,â€￾ he replied.

But was this first-degree murder? Did Jordan go into the house to kill Keith Cope?

Police and paramedics testified Cope was alive when they arrived, but he died more than two weeks later at an area hospital once life support was removed.


That will be the key point defense attorneys will make as they try to keep their client out of Florida's death chamber
