From Marietta, Georgia:
Investigators in Marietta said they are leaning toward the possibility an 8-year-old boy committed suicide or accidentally killed himself.
Those investigators are hoping an autopsy being conducted Thursday will answer their questions about the death of D'enthonee Davis.
Davis' parents called 9-1-1 just before 10 p.m. Wednesday to report that they found their son unresponsive inside his bedroom at the Highland Court apartments on Allgood Road. Paramedics rushed Davis to Kennestone Hospital but he was later pronounced dead.
Marietta investigators said they are leaning toward an accidental hanging or suicide as a cause of the boy's death while they await the autopsy. They do not believe Davis died of natural causes.
Davis' parents said their son, who turned 8 in December, had been suspended from school Wednesday for throwing a crayon at a child in the first grade. The parents said they sent him to his room as a punishment. When they went to check on him, they found him passed out with a belt wrapped around his neck.
The boy's stepfather told 11Alive News that D'enthonee may have died as the result of a freak accident.
"He was here with this brother, with his uncles and other kids were here. He was up in his bedroom due to the punishment that my wife and I agreed upon. You know, accidents happened," said his stepfather, Mark Burns.
Investigators closed off the apartment and were treating it as a crime scene until they determine it is not one.
