Benighted

My brain hurts
I haven't done this for a long time so hope I get it right. Not much info yet but it's not looking favorable for the father or his gf.

Rochester Police are investigating how a 3-year-old girl from Greece died. Her grandfather believes she was beaten to death.

John Geer is Brook Stagles' grandfather. He says the 3-year-old died Monday morning, just one day after being brought to the hospital.
[...]
Geer says Brook's injuries were so severe doctors asked if she had been hit by a car. She was transferred to Strong Hospital where she died the next morning.
[...]

"I don't know how [Brook's mother] is going to survive without her daughter. That is the biggest concern right now. Brook was her world as any parent could verify, that their kids are everything,” said John Geer, Brook’s grandfather.

Geer says Brook was in the care of her father Michael Stagles and his girlfriend at the time.

Her grandfather John Geer says Brooke's parents, his daughter Ashley and her ex-boyfriend Michael Stagles, split up earlier this summer. Child Protective Services had been called in to investigate accusations that came from both sides.

Brooke eventually went to live with her father Michael, his family and his new girlfriend Erica Bell.

“Brooke is an adventurous little girl so you almost could believe it for a second that she's getting hurt doing this and that,” Geer said in an interview. “But it was common, and bruises kept coming up bigger, and more painful."

Geer said they continued calling CPS, believing that Brooke was being abused. Then Sunday night, Brooke's father took her to the hospital.

“They asked us if she was in car accident. And we said no,” Geer said.

Doctors resuscitated Brooke when she got to the hospital, but she did not live long, he said.

Brooke died Monday.

“She had internal damage. She went septic and she didn't pull through,” said Geer.

Looks like there were a few "uh oh's" in the comments to his engagement to Erica. I agree with the grandfather...if they couldn't determine who was abusing the girls based on accusations on both sides...CPS should have removed the girl until a determination could be made. I guess now CPS can rightfully side with the mother in this case...too little too late. RIP Brook.

Give Erica's complexion a closer look, I don't think that's acne.

ETA: Duh, speaking to her picture on his fb, talking about being engaged.

Erica has a few comments on some of her FB pictures from earlier this year about getting clean. She looked better in the older pictures than the more recent ones.

It seems Erica is quite the winner. The Josh referenced on her FB page is Josh Murray, a petty criminal well known to local police in several nearby towns, and she's been arrested with him at least twice for burglary in the last couple of years. The most recent was after a string of car break ins. I'm guessing they weren't the smartest criminals in history as Rellim Road, one of the neighborhoods they targeted, is where the police department is located.

This is interesting. According to the Monroe County Inmate Roster, an Erica Bell of the same age as this one was taken into custody and is currently at the county jail but she was arrested on the 12th, the day before Brook was taken to hospital. Can't dig up a mugshot so can't absolutely guarantee it's the same one but it's quite a coincidence if it isn't.

Poor sweetie in her Doc McStuffins gear. Too bad there's no magic way to remove your hurts, angel. :(

The arrest with her ex-husband Josh was from March of this year. So Erica and Brook's dad haven't been together but what...about 6 months or so...they were engaged August 18th. I wonder what Brook's dad's criminal history is...can someone look it up please...I don't know how. Thank you in advance!!!

I couldn't find anything much on Brook's dad. No criminal court appearances listed with the county clerk and no current arrest or warrant info, at least not in Monroe County.

It is this Erica that got arrested Saturday. She violated probation and is in county jail without bond or bail. She had a third court appearance in September but the record is sealed so I can't see what that one was for.
[doublepost=1479447789,1479419518][/doublepost]What in the actual fuckity fuck... more coming out about how Brook was living. How do you see this and do nothing??

According to the Rochester Police Department, no arrests have been made, but family and friends are coming forward about red flags raised - some wishing they did more.

That includes Robin Reyome, who ended up driving Brook to the hospital. Reyome has an 11-year-old son, Dylan, with Brook's father, Michael Stagles.

Reyome said she was in and out of his home often so her son could visit his father.

"This little girl didn't deserve this - she was a helpless little girl," Reyome said. "She was something special and she deserved way better."

Reyome said two days before Brook's death, she urged Michael Stagles and his girlfriend to take Brook to the hospital. She went to pick up her son from Michael's home and noticed people passed out on the floor.

"I saw Brook and I paused," Reyome said. "It was like a horror movie. She looked like death."

Reyome knew something was terribly wrong and thought Brook looked gravely ill. Reyome said she woke Michael up and insisted she drive Brook to the hospital.

"I watched them put that baby in the car and drive off," Reyome said.

She said they never went.

"I thought he was going to take her to the doctor," Reyome said. "He said he was going to take her. He thought of himself before his daughter because he thought he was going to get in trouble."

On Saturday night, Reyome said she checked in on Michael to see how Brook was feeling. Reyome said Brook had two black eyes and bruises all over body. She said Michael asked Brook how she got hurt. Reyome said Michael told her that Brook said she fell down the stairs.[...]

The gf's FB page got real interesting tonight too with Dad did it vs. gf did it camps at war.

Forgive me if I'm a little obsessed with this one, it's very close to home.

I wonder if this stuff about there being other people at the house (conscious or not) is complicating the investigation because it indicates Brook was exposed to more people than just dad and his gf so they could claim the abuse was at someone else's hands and physical evidence or an eye witness would be needed to indict someone specific.

I'm getting a bit fed up with hearing friends, neighbors and grandfather mouthing off about how they knew there was abuse but they didn't want to get involved or CPS didn't do anything. If you think a child is being abused that bad and you have the opportunity, take the kid yourself to a police station or hospital, don't just call some overworked social service department and hope they'll take care of it.

I agree....the mother of Michael Slagle's son woke him and told him to take her to the hospital...they got in the car she said...so she ASSUMED they took her to the doctor or hospital. She should have called the cops. She was just as afraid he'd get in trouble or she would have made that call. I'm sure her son has witnessed the abuse if it was ongoing as it appears. Ticks me off. She failed that little girl as much as they did. Her life could have been saved if she had gotten medical attention a day sooner. Brook suffered terribly those last 24 hours of her life.
[doublepost=1480009583,1479536424][/doublepost]I've been checking every day and still no arrests. I would think that until the investigation progresses they would have at least charged the father and girlfriend with failing to seek medical assistance for Brook. This case is eating away at me.
[doublepost=1481511221][/doublepost]Finally the father and girlfriend are charged in the death of little Brook Stagle.

Brook was scheduled to meet with a CPS social worker the day she died. Geer insists CPS never returned phone calls and never entered the home.

When Brook Stagles arrived at the emergency room of Rochester General Hospital in the afternoon hours of Nov. 14, she wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.

Doctors rushed to give her aid, performing CPR, giving her intravenous antibiotics and epinephrine shots in an attempt to restart her tiny heart.

“My first thought when I saw her was that I was looking at a corpse,” said Dr. Kevin O’Gara, the pediatric emergency physician who first treated Brook on the day her father, Michael Stagles, brought her to the hospital.

O’Gara was the first witness to testify Tuesday in the ongoing second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter trial of Erica Bell. Bell is accused of beating 3-year-old Brook and then thwarting efforts to get her necessary medical attention.

Prosecutors say Brook was beaten sometime before Nov. 11, 2016, and got progressively sicker over that weekend. She died at Strong Memorial Hospital on Nov. 14, 2016.

Michael Stagles is charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with the case and is being tried separately.

Under questioning by Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Sara VanStrydonck, O’Gara said after doctors were able to restart Brook’s heart, a computed tomography scan showed the child had indications of a perforated bowel.

With graphic photographs taken in the emergency room, he also detailed a litany of bruises, both recent and older, that covered the child’s body: her face, abdomen, groin, arms and legs.

An Ogden police officer called to Rochester General that afternoon choked up on the stand while recounting the condition of Brook’s body when he arrived.

Also testifying Tuesday morning was Rochester Police Officer Courtney Carbonel, an evidence technician summoned Nov. 13 to the Albemarle Street home where Brook lived with her father, Michael Stagles, and Bell, his girlfriend. Her photographs showed a house of squalor, with filth and bugs throughout the kitchen and the dirty basement where Stagles, Bell and Brook lived packed with junk and strewn with medicine bottles.

In afternoon testimony, Brook's great-grandmother Gail Geer testified Brook began showing up with bruises shortly after Erica Bell had moved in with Michael Stagles that summer.

"Every time she came over, she had new marks on her body," she said.

In other testimony, Dylan Stagles-Reyome, Michael Stagles' 12-year-old son, said he was in the Albemarle Street house the night of Nov. 11.

When he arrived to stay overnight, he said, Bell and Michael Stagles were in the kitchen, trying to get Brook to drink medicine from a cup, but she kept spitting it out.

He said Brook had a bath that night and "it was the only way her skin looked normal," explaining that she was pale and had purple marks all over, and she threw up on him as he dried her off after her bath.

When he saw her again the next morning, he said, "she looked like a zombie to me."

Dylan's mother, Robin Reyome, recounted her experiences on Nov. 12 when she went to the Albemarle Street home to pick Dylan up.

She found Brook on the couch, curled up in a fetal position.

"She reminded me of the girl from The Ring," she said. "She was pale, had no color and was wet on one side. I didn't know if it was from going to the bathroom or throwing up."

Reyome said she demanded that Michael Stagles take Brook to the hospital and refused to leave until she knew the girl was on her way. She stayed about an hour, until she watched Erica Bell and Brook get into Bell's grandmother's car, ostensibly to go to the hospital.

On Monday, prosecutors said that Bell instead had her grandmother take her to Clinton Avenue to score drugs, back to Albemarle Street to pick up Michael Stagles and then to a baby shower in Spencerport. Bell was arrested at that baby shower on an outstanding warrant.

Key to Bell's defense is the claim that she was abused by Michael Stagles and that her admissions of guilt and actions surrounding Brook's illness and death were ultimately efforts to protect him.

The last days and hours of Brook Stagles' young life were a hell of increasing agony and sickness.

Over a three-day span, as infection from a perforated bowel ravaged Brook's tiny body, the woman accused in her slaying her not only ignored the youngster's increasing symptoms but thwarted attempts by others to get her necessary medical care, prosecutors say.

Calling Erica Bell's actions toward Brook, her boyfriend's daughter, "wicked, evil, depraved and inhuman," Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher laid out the state's case on Monday morning during opening arguments in Bell's second-degree murder trial.

In his opening arguments, Bell's attorney Lawrence L. Kasperek said he concedes Brook's injuries — her multiple bruises, her ruptured intestines — but said his client is not the indifferent monster prosecutors paint. Instead, he said, Bell and Brook both were victims of horrific domestic violence perpetrated by Stagles.

He said Stagles repeatedly beat Bell during their relationship, at one point even burning her with cigarettes. And, that in her abused state, Kasperek said, she was unable to protect herself or Brook from Stagles' fury. He said the delay in seeking medical treatment stemmed from not understanding the extent of the girl's injuries, not disregard for her life, and Bell's admissions in jailhouse phone calls to having beaten the girl were attempts by Bell to protect Michael Stagles from the consequences of his actions.

"The perpetrator is protected from the violence he created because of the violence he created," Kasperek said.

Listen to the shit the momster's grandfather is spewing. He's trying to play the concerned citizen to deflect his and his family's failure.
[...]

In the year since Brook's death, her maternal grandfather, John Geer of Irondequoit, has devoted time and money to drawing attention to overworked child protective services agencies here and across the country. His campaign includes billboards, advertisements in local and national newspapers and radio spots. He believes that a faster response by Monroe County Child Protective Services to ongoing complaints about Bell and Stagles could have saved his granddaughter's life.

Cases like Brook's, with parents enveloped in their own drug crises and addictions, show the need for well-funded and highly proactive child protective agencies.

"This is why CPS needs to be able to do their jobs and protect these kids, like it says in their names," he said. "There are just all these vulnerable kids out there who don't stand a chance without CPS doing their jobs."

Don't try to shaft blame for your failure to someone else, you piece of shit. Maybe if you and your fucking family was doing its societal responsibility of training your children to be decent, caring people, they would grow up to be decent, caring adults that don't pollute their bodies with smack or beat their toddlers so bad that they die in agony of sepsis. If you want to know why CPS is so "overworked" look in the fucking mirror, you fuckwad.

This is the grandfather of the little girl on the mothers side. They called CPS. Then the asshole father and his whore retaliated by calling CPS on the mom. The family of the mother reported the abuse multiple times but dad blamed it on mom. So yes CPS failed this child. They did nothing to protect her. I imagine they never even talked to the child or she would have told them who was abusing her.

MANSLAUGHTER?!?!?!?!?

Ugh. I need to leave this story. That poor, sweet girl was failed at every junction.

"We gave her a bath because it was the only way her skin looked normal, not pale and purple"
"She reminded me of the girl from The Ring". "...a zombie..."

Fuck you both. May you both burn eternally.

ETA: You know, the more I look, the more she appears to be faking that smile.
She looks scared.

And GF is updating her FB page as recently as July? Cute little pics of her ALIVE baby?!?! Nope, nope, nope.

If Erica Bell was also beaten by Stagle then she should have had bruises too.
That "I was abused too" card is so tattered!
